Guilin 3-Day, 5-Day and 7-Day Itinerary for First-Time Visitors

Guilin Tourism

How Many Days Should You Spend There?

For a first visit, I usually recommend five days and four nights.

Three days are enough for the classic scenery. Five days allow you to combine the city, the Li River, Yangshuo, and the Longji Rice Terraces. Seven days are better for photography, hiking, village stays and a slower pace.

A simple guide:

  • 3 days: A short introduction
  • 5 days: The best balance for most international visitors
  • 7 days: A deeper and more relaxed experience

The important point is that these destinations offer different experiences. The city is best for history and transport; Yangshuo for countryside activities; Xingping for river scenery and photography; and Longji for mountain trails and ethnic village culture.

Quick Comparison

Trip Length Main Destinations Pace Best For
3 days City, Li River, Yangshuo Busy but classic Short holidays
5 days City, Li River, Yangshuo, Longji Balanced First-time visitors
7 days City, Yangshuo, Xingping, Longji Relaxed and detailed Photographers and hikers

A Classic 3-Day Itinerary

With only three days, focus on the city, the Li River, and Yangshuo. Adding Longji would increase travel time.

Day 1: Arrival and City Sightseeing

Depending on your arrival time, visit two or three attractions:

  • Elephant Trunk Hill
  • Two Rivers and Four Lakes
  • Reed Flute Cave
  • Jingjiang Prince’s City
  • East-West Lane
  • Zhengyang Pedestrian Street

If you arrive in the afternoon or evening, keep the schedule light. Check into your hotel, try local rice noodles, and take a short walk.

Day 2: Li River Cruise and Yangshuo

A Li River cruise generally takes most of the day. You will see karst peaks, farmland, riverside villages and bamboo rafts.

After arriving in Yangshuo, check into your accommodation and choose a relaxed evening activity:

  • Walk around West Street
  • Stroll beside the river
  • Have dinner at a local restaurant
  • Attend an evening performance

Confirm the cruise pier, ticket type, and transfer arrangements in advance.

Day 3: Yangshuo Countryside and Departure

Choose one or two activities:

  • Yulong River bamboo rafting
  • Cycling along the Ten-Mile Gallery
  • Visiting Moon Hill
  • Walking through rural villages
  • Exploring local cafés or markets

If you are leaving by plane or train that day, calculate the transfer time carefully. Do not schedule a long cycling route or rafting trip just before departure.

Who Is This Plan For?

  • Travellers with a short holiday
  • First-time visitors who want the main highlights
  • People who prefer fewer hotel changes
  • Travellers are more interested in rivers and the countryside than in mountain hiking

Limitations

  • There is not enough time for Longji
  • You can only choose a few Yangshuo activities
  • Weather changes leave little room for adjustment
  • The overall pace is fairly full

A Balanced 5-Day Itinerary

Five days is the itinerary I most often recommend. It combines four types of experience: city, river, countryside and mountains.

Day 1: City History and Evening Views

Choose two or three attractions:

  • Elephant Trunk Hill
  • Two Rivers and Four Lakes
  • Reed Flute Cave
  • Jingjiang Prince’s City
  • East-West Lane

Leave time for lunch, rest,t and getting used to local transport.

Day 2: Li River Cruise and Yangshuo

Spend the day on the river and continue to Yangshuo afterwards.

Useful items include:

  • Sun protection
  • A light rain jacket
  • A power bank
  • Drinking water
  • A small backpack

Choose your accommodation according to your travel style:

  • Stay near West Street for restaurants and nightlife
  • Stay near the Yulong River for peace and nature
  • Stay in the town centre for convenient transport

Day 3: Yulong River and the Countryside

Possible activities include:

  • Bamboo rafting
  • Cycling along the Ten-Mile Gallery
  • Visiting Moon Hill
  • Rural photography
  • Eating at a countryside restaurant

Do not try to complete every activity in one day. The countryside is more enjoyable when you leave time to stop and rest.

When renting an electric scooter, confirm the rental price, deposit, return time, battery condition, and damage policy.

Day 4: Travel to Longji

Travelling from Yangshuo to Longji requires planning. The two destinations are in different directions, so many visitors transfer through the city or arrange a private vehicle.

After arrival:

  1. Check into your accommodation
  2. Learn the locations of the viewpoints and trails
  3. Choose a short walk based on your fitness level
  4. Watch the terraces in the late afternoon

Some guesthouses require uphill walking. Check the luggage arrangements before booking.

Day 5: Terraces and Departure

The morning is usually a good time for mountain villages, terraces and clouds. After breakfast, return to the city or continue to your next destination.

If you have a flight that day, be careful with the timing. Mountain roads, shuttle services, traffic and weather can all make the journey longer than expected.

Who Is This Plan For?

  • First-time visitors to China
  • Travellers who want scenery, villages and terraces
  • Couples and families
  • Visitors who prefer a balanced schedule
  • Photographers who do not want to do intense hiking every day

A Deeper 7-Day Itinerary

Seven days are ideal if you want more time in Yangshuo and Xingping, as well as a proper stay in the mountains.

Day 1: Arrival and Adjustment

Keep the first day easy:

  • Check into your hotel
  • Buy water and basic supplies
  • Learn the local transport options
  • Have a relaxed dinner
  • Take a short walk

This extra time can be useful for international visitors adjusting to mobile payments, navigation, ion and local routines.

Day 2: City Attractions

Visit attractions such as:

  • Elephant Trunk Hill
  • Two Rivers and Four Lakes
  • Reed Flute Cave
  • Jingjiang Prince’s City
  • East-West Lane

Choose historical sites if you enjoy culture, or parks and caves if you prefer nature.

Day 3: Li River Cruise and Yangshuo

Take the cruise and continue to Yangshuo. In the evening, walk around West Street or relax near the river.

Day 4: Yulong River and Countryside Cycling

A full countryside day could include:

  • Morning bamboo rafting
  • Lunch at a rural restaurant
  • Afternoon cycling
  • Sunset beside the river
  • A relaxed evening at your hotel

During summer, schedule outdoor activities in the morning and late afternoon.

Day 5: Xingping Old Town and River Views

Spend a full day in Xingping, or stay overnight.

Possible activities include:

  • Walking through the old town
  • Visiting the riverside
  • Seeing the landscape associated with China’s 20-yuan banknote
  • Exploring nearby viewpoints
  • Taking a short hike

Early morning is especially suitable for photography, when the river is usually quieter.

Yangshuo offers more activities and nightlife, while Xingping is more compact and peaceful.

Day 6: Travel to Longji

Allow most of the day for the transfer. Depending on your interests, choose an area such as:

  • Ping’an Rice Terraces
  • Jinkeng Dazhai
  • Ancient Zhuang Village

Check walking distances and transfer arrangements before selecting accommodation.

Day 7: Morning Views and Departure

Enjoy the terraces and villages in the morning, then leave according to your transport schedule.

If possible, spend one more night in the city before an early flight. This is usually less stressful than travelling directly from the mountains to the airport.

How Many Days Suit Different Travellers?

Couples

Four or five days are ideal. Spend extra time in Yangshuo and include cycling, rafting, countryside restaurants and riverside activities.

Families with Children

Around five days works well. Keep the route simple and decide whether Longji is suitable based on the children’s age, fitness and the weather.

Older Travelers

Five to seven days are better, with fewer hotel changes and shorter walks. Choose accommodation close to viewpoints where possible.

Photographers

Seven days are ideal. Extra nights make it easier to wait for mist, reflections, sunrise and sunset without rushing between locations.

Backpackers

Five to seven days allow more time for public transport, budget accommodation and rural exploration. Travellers with Only Three Days

Skip Longji and focus on:

  • The city
  • The Li River
  • The Yangshuo countryside

This is more enjoyable than spending most of the holiday on transfers.

How Should You Divide Your Accommodation?

Three Days

  • One night in the city
  • One night in Yangshuo

Five Days

  • One night in the city
  • Two nights in Yangshuo
  • One night in Longji

Seven Days

  • One night in the city
  • Two nights in Yangshuo
  • One night in Xingping
  • Two nights in Longji

Avoid changing hotels every day, especially if you have a lot of large luggage. Mountain guesthouses may require climbing stairs or walking uphill, so a small backpack is more practical.

Important Planning Tips

Do Not Schedule the Cruise on Your Departure Day

The cruise takes much of the day, and the pier may be some distance from your accommodation.

Do Not Treat Longji as a Quick Half-Day Visit

Mountain roads, shuttle services and walking trails require time. Staying at least one night creates a much better experience.

Leave Room for Rain

Rain can affect cruises, rafting and hiking. Indoor alternatives include caves, historic buildings, museums, markets and food experiences.

Do Not Estimate Travel Only by Map Distance

Actual travel time can be affected by mountain roads, traffic, transfers and weather. Allow extra time when travelling to an airport or railway station.

Confirm Current Information

Cruise schedules, opening hours, tickets, shuttle services, and accommodation policies are subject to change. Check official announcements before departure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I see the highlights in three days?

Yes. Focus on the city, the Li River and Yangshuo. Longji is better saved for a longer trip.

Are five days enough for Yangshuo and Longji?

Yes. A five-day trip can include the city, the river, Yangshuo,o and the rice terraces, but the main transportation should be arranged in advance.

Is seven days too long?

No. Seven days are ideal for photographers, hikers, cyclists, and travellers who want to stay in villages.

Should I visit Yangshuo or Longji first?

A common route is to visit the river and Yangshuo first, then continue to Longji. This creates a natural transition from river scenery to mountain landscapes.

Can I stay in only one place?

You can, but it adds unnecessary travel time. Staying only in the city makes Yangshuo and Longji less convenient, while staying only in Yangshuo makes city sightseeing more difficult.

What is the best first-time route?

I recommend:

One day in the city + two days around the Li River and Yangshuo + two days in Longji.

Add Xingping and extra countryside time if you have a seven-day holiday.

Final Thoughts

Three days are enough for the classic scenery. Five days offer the best balance for most visitors. Seven days allow you to slow down and experience the rivers, villages, mountains and local cultures more deeply.

As a Chinese person, I would recommend a 5-day, 4-night stay for a first visit. It covers the essential sights without turning the whole trip into a series of long transfers.
