Backpacking Tent Weight Guide: How Light Is Too Light for the UK?

By JJames giugno 21, 2026

Tent weight is one of the first numbers backpackers compare, but it can also be misleading. A lighter tent can make hiking easier, especially on steep UK routes, but reducing weight often means thinner fabrics, smaller vestibules, fewer guylines and less interior space. The real question is not simply “How light can I go?” but “How light can I go while staying comfortable and protected?”

For solo UK backpacking, a tent under 1.5kg is generally considered lightweight. Many modern one-person tents fall between 900g and 1.4kg. Ultralight trekking pole tents may drop below 800g, especially if they use walking poles instead of dedicated tent poles. These shelters are attractive for long-distance walkers, fast overnighters and experienced hikers who want to reduce pack weight.

For two-person tents, anything under 2kg is a reasonable backpacking weight, while tents under 1.5kg are firmly in lightweight territory. However, two-person tent weight should be judged alongside liveability. A very light two-person tent may be narrow, low and short on storage. In British weather, that can become uncomfortable quickly.

The UK adds several complications. Wet ground means the floor must be reliable. Wind means guylines and stable pole geometry matter. Rain means a good vestibule is useful for storing wet gear. Condensation means ventilation is essential. If a tent saves weight by compromising all of these features, it may be too light for your intended use.

A good way to judge tent weight is by trip type. For summer lowland routes, sheltered camps and short overnight trips, an ultralight tent can be ideal. For exposed mountain camping, Scottish routes or shoulder-season backpacking, a slightly heavier tent with better structure may be smarter. In winter or severe weather, weight becomes less important than strength and safety.

Fabric durability is another consideration. Ultralight tents often use thinner denier fabrics. These can be strong for their weight but need careful handling. Avoid pitching on sharp stones, do not force zips, and consider a footprint if the groundsheet is very thin. Heavier tents are usually more forgiving, especially for beginners.

Packed weight can also be deceptive. Some manufacturers list minimum trail weight, which may exclude pegs, stuff sacks, guylines or footprints. For real-world UK use, check the complete packed weight. A tent that looks 200g lighter online may not be lighter once you add the accessories needed for bad weather.

Comfort should not be ignored. In the UK, bad weather can force you inside the tent for long evenings. A shelter that is extremely light but too small to sit up in, store wet gear or avoid touching condensation may not be enjoyable. For many hikers, carrying an extra 300g is worth it for better sleep and easier living.

As a rough guide, solo beginners should look for a tent around 1.2kg to 1.8kg. Experienced ultralight hikers may go below 1kg. Two-person backpackers should consider tents around 1.5kg to 2.5kg depending on conditions and comfort needs.

The best tent weight for the UK is a balance. Choose the lightest tent that still provides the weather protection, durability and space you genuinely need.

FAQ

Is a 2kg tent too heavy for backpacking?
For solo use, it is on the heavy side. For two people, it can be perfectly reasonable.

Are sub-1kg tents suitable for the UK?
Yes, for experienced users and suitable conditions, but they require careful use.

Should beginners buy ultralight tents?
Not always. A slightly heavier tent is often more forgiving.
