Single Wall or Double Wall Tent for the UK?

By JJames giugno 21, 2026

For UK backpacking, the single-wall versus double-wall tent debate is mainly about weight and condensation. Single-wall tents are lighter because one layer of fabric acts as both shelter and living space. This is common in ultralight trekking pole tents.

The downside is condensation. In damp British conditions, moisture can form on the inside of the fabric. If your sleeping bag touches the wall, it may get wet. Good ventilation helps, but single-wall tents require more care.

Double-wall tents have an inner tent and an outer flysheet. This creates a barrier between you and condensation, making them more comfortable in wet and cool weather. They are usually heavier, but many UK backpackers find the extra weight worthwhile.

For beginners and long rainy trips, a double-wall tent is usually the safer choice. For experienced ultralight hikers, a single-wall tent can work well with careful pitching and ventilation.
