What to Wear Under Waterproof Trousers

By JJames giugno 22, 2026

Waterproof trousers are useful in UK weather, but they can be uncomfortable if your layers underneath are wrong. Too warm and you sweat. Too thin and you get cold when the wind picks up. The right setup depends on temperature and how hard you are walking.

In mild weather, many hikers wear waterproof trousers over normal walking trousers. This is the simplest option. It protects from rain and wind without needing a full clothing change.

In warmer conditions, waterproof trousers over shorts can work surprisingly well. Your legs stay drier, and you avoid the clammy feeling of wet fabric under waterproofs. This is common among hikers who run warm.

In cold weather, wear a thin base layer or thermal leggings under walking trousers. If rain starts, waterproof trousers go over the top. This gives warmth without relying on the waterproof layer itself for insulation.

Avoid jeans or cotton trousers. Once wet, cotton stays wet and feels cold. Synthetic walking trousers or softshell trousers are much better because they dry faster and layer more comfortably.

Breathability is the main issue. Waterproof trousers trap heat and sweat, especially on climbs. Side zips help with ventilation and make it easier to put trousers on over boots.

Fit matters. Waterproof trousers should be loose enough to move in but not so baggy that they flap badly. If they are too tight, they restrict steps and feel uncomfortable on steep ground.

For most UK hikers, the basic system is simple: quick-drying walking trousers, waterproof trousers in the pack, and thermal leggings when it is cold. Adjust based on season.

Waterproof trousers are not glamorous, but when rain turns sideways, you will be glad you packed them.
