How to Get to Zhangjiajie from Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi’an and Wuhan

Zhangjiajie Railway Station

If you are already travelling in China, reaching this mountain destination from Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi’an, or Wuhan is quite practical. As a Chinese guide, I would first help you choose between three things: time, comfort and simplicity.

In most cases, Chongqing and Wuhan are best reached by high-speed rail. Chengdu is also very easy to reach by train. From Xi’an, flying is often easier if your schedule is tight. Most train travellers arrive at West Railway Station, while flight travellers land at Hehua International Airport, also known by the airport code DYG.

Quick Comparison

Starting City Best Choice Typical Time Best For
Chengdu High-speed train About 4-5.5 hours Easy overland travel
Chongqing High-speed train About 2-4.5 hours Almost everyone
Xi’an Flight first, train second Flight about 1.5 hours; train about 9-10 hours Short itineraries
Wuhan High-speed train About 5 hours Central China routes

From Chengdu

From Chengdu, I usually recommend the train first. Departures often use Chengdu East, with arrivals at West Railway Station. For foreign visitors, this is easier than dealing with airports: no early check-in, no baggage drop, and a calmer travel rhythm. Upon arrival, go directly to your hotel. Stay near Tianmen Mountain Cableway if you plan to visit Tianmen the next morning. Stay in Wulingyuan if your first full day of sightseeing is at the national forest park.

My guide's advice: after pandas and hotpot in Chengdu, give yourself a soft landing. Arrive, eat, sleep, and start fresh in the mountains the next day.

From Chongqing

Chongqing is now one of the easiest gateways. Since the Chongqing East-Qianjiang section of the Chongqing-Xiamen high-speed railway opened in 2025, rail time to northwest Hunan has become much shorter. Some services can be around two hours, depending on the station and train.

Be careful with station names. Chongqing East, Chongqing West, and Chongqing North are not the same place, and the city is huge. Always compare the Chinese station name on your ticket with the one in your map app.

My guide's advice: take the train unless a flight fits your exact plan beautifully. The rail route is usually simpler and more predictable.

From Xi’an

From Xi’an, flying is usually the easiest option for time-sensitive travellers. When operating, direct flights from Xi’an Xianyang International Airport to DYG take about 1.5 hours. However, flight schedules can be seasonal, so check your exact travel date.

The train is possible, but it is a long ride. Some days may have direct services, while other days may require a transfer through cities such as Changsha, Wuhan, or Huaihua. I would choose rail only if you enjoy train travel or want to add another stop.

My guide's advice: do not land and rush straight into a major mountain attraction. Give your body one quiet evening before the big views.

From Wuhan

Wuhan is a very logical rail gateway. Trains may depart from Wuhan Station or Wuchang Station, so check the station carefully. The journey is often about five hours, with final timing depending on the date and train.

This route works well if your China trip moves through Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing or central China before heading into the mountains. The high-speed rail system is structured and foreigner-friendly once your ticket is booked.

My guide's advice: if your first day of sightseeing is the forest park, sleep in Wulingyuan. If it is Tianmen Mountain, sleep downtown.

After Arrival

Arrival Point To Downtown / Tiananmen Area To Wulingyuan
West Railway Station About 20-30 minutes About 40-60 minutes
Hehua International Airport About 10-20 minutes About 45-60 minutes

For first-time visitors, I like to match the hotel with the next morning’s attraction. It saves energy, and in mountain travel, energy is part of the itinerary.

Booking Tips

Use China Railway 12306 for official train schedules and ticketing. Foreign travellers can book with a passport. For flights, check your exact date because direct routes can change with the season, demand, and airline schedules.

My Local Guide Summary

For the smoothest plan, take the train from Chongqing, Wuhan, or Chengdu; consider flying from Xi’an. Then slow down. The mountains here reward travellers who do not arrive already exhausted.
