Hydrostatic head measures how much water pressure a tent fabric can resist before leaking. You will often see ratings such as 1,500mm, 3,000mm or 5,000mm. For UK backpacking, the number matters, but it is not the whole story.
A flysheet around 1,500mm to 3,000mm can be suitable if the tent is well designed. The groundsheet usually needs a higher rating because your body weight pushes it against wet ground. For British conditions, 3,000mm or higher is a sensible starting point for the floor.
Seams are just as important as fabric ratings. A waterproof fabric can still leak if seams are not taped or sealed. Tent shape also matters because sagging fabric can collect water.
Do not buy only by the biggest number. Choose a tent with reliable seams, good fly coverage, a bathtub floor and enough ventilation for damp UK weather.
