How to Pack a Rucksack for UK Hill Walking

By JJames giugno 22, 2026

Packing a rucksack well makes walking easier. Packing badly makes everything harder. A lumpy, unbalanced pack can rub, swing around and make steep ground feel worse than it should.

Start with waterproofing. In the UK, use a pack liner or dry bags for important items. Spare layers, gloves, electronics and emergency kit should stay dry even if the outside of the pack gets soaked.

Put heavier items close to your back and fairly high in the pack. This helps balance. Water, food, spare layers and group gear should not all sit at the very bottom.

Keep waterproofs easy to reach. If rain starts, you do not want to empty the whole pack. A jacket should be near the top or in an outer pocket. Waterproof trousers should also be accessible on wet days.

Small essentials need a regular place. Head torch, map, compass, snacks, gloves and first aid should be easy to find. If you have to search every pocket for your head torch, your system needs work.

Food should be split between lunch and snacks. Keep snacks accessible so you eat before you get tired. On cold or wet days, simple food you can eat quickly is better than something that needs a long stop.

Water bottles should be reachable. Side pockets are useful if you can access them without taking the pack off. Hydration bladders are convenient but harder to monitor.

Do not leave sharp or hard items against your back. A badly placed flask, stove or hard container can become annoying after a few miles.

Use outer pockets carefully. They are good for wet gear, maps or gloves, but do not overload them. Too much weight on the outside makes the pack swing.

At the end, tighten compression straps so the load does not shift. A stable pack feels lighter than a loose one.

A well-packed rucksack is not about perfection. It is about dry gear, good balance and quick access to the things you need most often. For UK hill walking, that makes a real difference.
